Freight Industry

In 2003, the Department of Transport and Urban Planning (DTUP) put out a tender for the acquisition of a Country Freight Groupage and Scheduling System. DTUP identified that group buying of freight services by communities in country areas would deliver a number of direct and indirect benefits.

These findings were supported by the results of a country freight services survey conducted by DTUP, plus findings by other organisations including Eat Well SA and The Health Commission of South Australia.

Prodata Solutions were the successful bidders for the project with viper:freight logistics chosen to provide the rich functionality and flexibility required to meet the project objectives.

In 2003 Prodata Solutions worked with DTUP to prove the benefits of Group Freight Buying. A Modelling tool was developed to demonstrate potential savings to community groups. Results from a survey conducted by DTUP was used to show savings in excess of 30% would be achieved for a community by consolidating freight across its member base.

The concept of Group Freight Buying applies not only to remote communities but also benefits consortiums that provide managed freight services to their members.
